Not Everything is All Sunshine
Valerie Faris and Johnathan Dayton, the directors of Little Miss Sunshine, recognize and acknowledge some social norms that have become in effect throughout society, some that alter people´s lives overall. This movie ties together a dysfunctional family, body image issues and self confidence all in one. Instead of another movie that resembles a fantasy this, this movie gives a little insight on what a ¨normal¨ family dynamic is. Per Olive being in a beauty contest, the norm of not eating ice cream or doing anything different from the others is resembled by the father. He tries to make Olive recognize that eating ice cream ¨makes people fat,¨ and that you don´t see fat girls winning beauty contests. Another norm that teaches a lesson in this movie could be the outlook on the family as a whole. If you saw a picture of them you would see a normal looking family, but after watching them as the movie goes on, you can see everyone and their true personalities. Little Miss Sunshine portrays that a normal looking family can be very dysfunctional. This can be proved by the grandfathers overdose, brother´s vow of silence, the dad´s anger and confidence problems along with the uncle trying to commit suicide. All these backgrounds tie together to teach a lesson on all families are not perfect. There are many different opinions between the parents that lead to them arguing as well. These arguments, deaths and social situations can be relatable by a lot of viewers. The big moral of this movie is that no matter what issue comes up for the family, they always end up sticking together and dealing with the situation head on.
