There really is nowhere to hide

 

This cover drew my attention as soon as I saw it. It instantly reminded me of situations I have learned about in the past. Knowing that The New Yorker focuses on social issues and conflicts in the world, I knew this cover had a bigger understanding to it. After researching the date of this cover, November 27, 2017. At this time , Donald Trump was being elected president. That caused many conflicts with women and how people thought he viewed women as the president. At first, I thought that the man on the cover was Donald Trump himself, due to his past. This cover was also published as the ¨Me Too¨ movement started to become acknowledged more.

The ¨Me Too¨ movement is a movement that brings awareness to women who have been sexually abused or assaulted.  It started spreading like rapid fire during November 2017. This was due to many female celebrities and well known women that were participating in it. To show that you were a part of this movement, you tweeted or put on social media, the saying, ¨Me Too.¨  Right around the time that this cover was published, female celebrities shared their own story and allowed the movement to become a safe place. This was a very important time period for women who were ready to open up to their sexual abuse stories. 

This cover shows a view from a room in a building pointing out towards the window. On the cover, Betty Boop is looking in from a window, into a man´s room. The most attention grabbing image within the cover was Betty Boop. Since she was a popular sex icon in the 1930´s. She is a female float being portrayed in a parade. The detail of her flying in the air, over a building concludes that she was a float with strings connecting her to the ground. The fear in her eyes is what draws attention to the man in the robe. Inside the room ,there is a man holding his robe open, meaning Betty can see him nude.Betty Boop was being sexualized within the cover by the man standing in the room. He is standing outward towards the window, in plain sight of Betty Boop. 

This man in the cover is publicly showing himself to this woman. The expression on her face stands out, it is clearly full of fear. She physically can't do anything about it, he is the only thing in her view. The man in the blue robe is standing there with his arms wide open in a confident position. It almost looks like he is in pose to demonstrate the power he thinks he has. Even though Betty Boop was known for being a sex icon, she is clearly feeling uncomfortable by this man still.

The man in the cover could be any man. Situations like these are more common than they should be. Since the man in the picture could be multiple men, proves the pact the sexual abuse, assault and harassment is too frequent. It could be Harvey Weinstien due the big head and the overall figure. Harvey was accused of multiple sexual assaults by multiple women. This became a known social issue for many women. Right before this cover was published by Barry Blitz,  Weinstein was being set out to suppress allegations against him. Another man that could possibly be in the cover is Donald Trump. He was just elected president and has a background along with multiple women accusing him for sexual abuse events that have happened to them by Trump. Not only were these issues social, they were now becoming involved within politics. 

In conclusion, this cover focuses on one main problem going on in the world, sexual abuse towards innocent women. The title being ¨Nowhere to Hide¨ proves that even while doing your job, like Betty Boop, there isn't a place to hide from men. Men think they hold some type of power over women. No matter what a women's job is, it does not mean that they should see a man nude without having a choice in what is happening. This is a problem that needs to be talked about more often. The ¨Me Too¨ movement is something that puts women's stories out there and helps this issue to become more known.
