Men don't have to be just men.
There is a solid definition of what a man should look and act like in 2020. We need to change that definition in the near by future. "To be a man," you have to act tough and show signs that you aren't weak. Over the years, violence has become a base layer in almost every man. Famous movies, games ,TV shows that are watched and played by men portray violence 95% of the time. It is thought to contribute to what the statistics show. African American men has violence as their leading cause of death. White men use the violent ways of guns to commit suicide. It was also found that 98% of mass shootings were conducted by men. The use of violence and guns become more common as time passes.
The social norms of men need to be focused on and changed. Many men have a guard put up when they are around others because they don't want their feelings to be looked at as weak. Men tend to act tough around others so that they give off the appearance of being "cool." The saying "grow a pair," is often said when men let their guard down and aren't acting as tough. Sometimes even friends of boys tend to belittle them if they show signs of affection or express their feelings toward the opposite sex. This just results in men feeling like they have all the power over women. Men hold a thought in their head that using or hurting a female is okay and even rewarding sometimes. In the movie. Tough Guise 2, there is a video shown of young boys bonding, laughing and referring back to a time where one of the guys raped a girl. Raping, abuse and violence should not be the way that they show control. Men in many situations and almost every day life, hold control over women.
Over time things have become better a little better for gay men, but the hatred towards them still out does it. Men are often judged if they show signs of feminization. If you act feminine in a male body, most of the time someone will always have something to say towards you that isn't positive. Many gay men are attacked and even murdered because they don't "act manly." This is where violent acts, committed by men play a big part in society again. Not only does the violence play a big part in a man's life but depression does also in a lot of cases. About 75% of men suffer from depression because of the way they live life and decide to silence it because it can be looked at as a sign of weakness in another man's eyes.
Micheal Ian Blacks op ed is about how broken men really are and how the world really has to change up the definition of being but it is also about how men choose to react to situations. His article portrays how hurt men are and what they face. Matt La bash's op ed is about how men can change how they are looked at and change their behavior but it could also be about how it is okay for men to not be the definition of men and that women don't have to try and be what the definition of a woman is.
