Would you say something?

                                                                                            Bike Thiefs

I want you to take a minute and think. If you saw someone breaking a safe and stealing a bike, would you step up and say something?

While watching this, I thought about what I would do and how it was different to those people who just walking by.  Personally I don't sit back while something wrong is happening. While watching this video, I started to think about a bigger picture. Not only was I wondering why people were just watching something clearly get stolen but I also wondered what caused them to be a bystander in the situation. In the middle of the city with hundreds of people, no one stopped to wonder if the bike getting stolen was someone's only way around.

What if the bike was stolen in the first place? What if the bike didn't work? What if it was the only thing a person had? A real bike thief doesn't think about any of these questions before stealing one. Although this Op-Doc was made to see how people in their daily life would react, there is many lessons to learn and think about after watching it.

Now that you have watched the Op-Doc and read some questions to think about, I want you to choose if you will be bystander or stand up for things that aren't right.

  1. Good work, Lili! Your title was the first thing that stood out to me. I also enjoyed your first Op-Doc, but did not write a comment, because I had already written a comment on another student's post in regards to the same issue. I want to share an experience that I recently had in regards to this same issue. Though not bikes, it still relates. In my neighborhood, my mother (and a couple other moms) set up a Christmas Decorating contest to raise money for Griffin's Guardians. Along with that, we set up a food drive to donate, while we were at it. We requested that everyone leave their items to donate on their porch Saturday evening between 4-6pm. So, my mom and I drove around the neighborhood at 6pm, picking up donations, to then bring to the donation center. I would get out of the car, go up to the porches, and bring the bags back to the car. We finished up and went inside at about 6:30 or 7. Well, someone had called the police and said that people were slow driving and stealing packages. So, another family was out later that night, slowly driving around the neighborhood, looking at the holiday decorations for the contest. They were pulled over by police who were sent to our neighborhood and had their car searched. All in all, it was all okay. We contacted the police station the next day and made them aware of both charity events that we have taking place. The basis behind this story is that someone did stand up, and it made us feel that much more comfortable about our neighborhood. People looking out for each other. Now, if they had not thrown away our mailbox flyers or been in the Facebook group, they would have known, but that is besides the point. There are good people out there. Good work, Lili!
